A New Way of Caring for Children
The SOS Village in Macedonia has adopted an innovative approach to care for children without parental guidance. Unlike the traditional “orphanage” system, where children are housed in large, impersonal facilities, this village has redefined the concept of family. Here, children are placed in separate houses, each looked after by a dedicated couple who lives with them 24 hours a day. The result? A nurturing environment where children grow up with a sense of belonging, living as part of a family, complete with parents, brothers, and sisters.
The age range of these children varies from babies to 15-year-olds, making it a dynamic and supportive community. Children and their foster parents receive everything they need, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being. Remarkably, these foster parents receive health and pension insurance, as well as a salary, providing them with the stability to care for the children effectively.
This exceptional village, nestled in the heart of Macedonia, consists of 12 houses, with 11 dedicated to providing homes for the children and their foster parents. The exterior of the houses is a testament to the care and attention given to the children. The well-maintained facades mirror the love and commitment of the entire community.
Meeting Their Needs
While the SOS Village in Macedonia is part of the International Organization, the costs of maintaining such a nurturing environment are substantial. To put it into perspective, the electricity bill for the entire complex alone amounts to approximately 1000 EUR per month. It is imperative that the village receives donations for its day-to-day functioning, ensuring that the children’s needs are met without compromise.
Our Contribution
The Charity for Balkan Children donated a variety of items to the SOS Village in Macedonia. These items were carefully chosen to bring joy and practical support to the children. We provided toys like watercolors, soccer and basketballs, as well as backpacks and school supplies to empower their education. We also included pampers and laundry soap to ensure their daily comfort and hygiene.
