7. Donation to the home for Children and Youth Jefimija in Kruševac, Serbia

Balkan Children’s first-ever donation went to the Home for Children and Youth Jefimija in Kruševac, and we couldn’t be more excited to announce our second donation to them and 7th overall. Our goal is to offer continued support to all centers and institutions that provide food, safety, and shelter to Balkan’s vulnerable groups, so we are thrilled to have been able to partner with Jefimija again.

To build stronger relationships with Jefimija’s staff and residents, better understand the struggles and challenges they face daily, and identify the best ways we can help them, the Balkan Children’s team visited them recently.

The Home’s director, Nataša Maksimović, welcomed us to the Home, showed us around the facilities, and gave us insights into the daily life at Jefimija.

What they needed

Every shelter has different needs at different times, so we try to avoid creating universal donation boxes that might prove useless at times. Therefore, we’ve consulted directly with the staff at Jefimija to learn about their needs before we set out to work on the boxes.

The items in our donation packages for Jefimija included:

• Laundry detergent and fabric softener;
• Universal floor cleaners;
• Shampoos and shower gels;
• Toilet paper and paper towels;
• Hand soaps;
• Toothpaste.

Jefimija receives some government subsidies for personal hygiene and cleaning products. However, the subsidy is minimal, not enough to cover the costs of brand-name products such as Ariel detergents or Dove shampoos.

So, we opted to create a few higher-quality donation boxes for Jefimija, filling them with several branded items. The kids get to enjoy using branded shampoos, while the staff can use high-quality products for cleaning and create a more pleasant environment for the residents.

It’s a win-win for all.
