About us
What is Charity for Balkan Children?
We are a non-governmental, humanitarian and non-profit organization that raises funds and delivers practical help to children and young people in the Western Balkans. We support orphanages, children’s homes, shelters, schools, kindergartens and facilities for children with disabilities.
Who founded the charity?
Charity for Balkan Children was founded by Saveta Tomović Dubak and Milo Dubak, who met while working with an international humanitarian organization with Special Consultative Status at the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Read more about the founders.
Which countries do you work in?
We have completed projects in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia, in cities including Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kruševac, Vranje, Berane, Višegrad, Sarajevo and Skopje. See all projects by country.
Where is the charity based?
The foundation is registered as Humanitarna Fondacija BALKAN CHILDREN, Bulevar Kralja Aleksandra 130, Belgrade, Serbia. Our founders are based in Chicago, and we organize community fundraisers there, such as our bake sales at Little Legends Playground.
Donations
How much of my donation goes to the children?
We are 100% volunteer-run, with no salaries and no office costs. Every dollar goes directly to the cause. The only deductions are unavoidable bank and transfer fees, which we list in our project reports.
How do I know my donation was really used?
Every project is published on our website with photos, the amounts spent, receipts and a signed confirmation from the institution that received the help. Browse our project reports.
Can I donate monthly?
Yes. On our donation page you can choose a one-time or monthly gift. Monthly gifts can be cancelled at any time.
Is online donation secure?
Yes. Payments are processed by Stripe, a secure payment provider used by millions of organizations. We never see or store your card details. You can pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes, for donors in the United States: your donation is tax-deductible in the USA. Outside the US, donations are not tax-deductible. After donating online you receive an email receipt from Stripe. If you need a donation letter for your taxes, contact us.
How do you decide what to donate?
We never donate based on assumptions. Before every project we ask the institution what it needs most, whether that is beds, shoes, hygiene products, school supplies or wheelchair-accessible tables, and we buy exactly that.
Getting involved
How can I volunteer?
We welcome help with fundraising events, bake sales, deliveries, translation, design and social media. Send us a message and tell us how you would like to help.
Can my business partner with you?
Yes. Businesses such as Lucky Hunter, Sava Gastro Events, Pure Freight Lines, Little Legends and Balkan Bakery support our projects through donations, events and in-kind help. Contact us about a partnership.
Can I suggest an institution that needs help?
Yes. If you know an orphanage, school or shelter in the Western Balkans that needs support, tell us about it. We research every request.
How does buying The Balkan Voyage help?
100% of the profits from our children’s book The Balkan Voyage: A Day at the Playground go to our projects for children in the Balkans.
Children’s privacy
Why don’t you show children’s faces in your photos?
To protect their privacy and safety. We only publish licensed images of children, and photos from our projects keep the children in them unrecognizable. Read why this matters.
